Healthy Effective Weight Loss

We become the food we eat, our mind dictates what, how, when and why we eat. Like breath, food maintains balance and equilibrium, provides fuel and generates abundance in mind, body and spirit. On the other hand, food can be as destructive as it can be constructive when it is not in accordance to our unique physical, emotional and spiritual constitution, lifestyle and true nature.

If Nature was a religion, the only sin we would be punished for would be over indulgence. No matter what kind of over indulgence we took upon ourselves.

In the words of the Master, Osho, indulgence is extreme living, renunciation is extreme death. Staying in the middle and being aware of the middle lies the balance.

So, how and why does weight loss differ for each individual? According to Ayurveda, we have a unique constitution.  Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old science that originated in India. Just as everyone has a unique fingerprint, each individual’s unique constitution is a very distinct combination of the five elements of space, air, fire, water and earth  — physical, mental, and emotional characteristics that can be categorized into three basic energy types called doshas.

  • Air & Space (vata) — energy that controls bodily functions associated with motion, including blood circulation, breathing, blinking, and heartbeat. Balanced vata energy represents creativity and vitality. Out of balance, vata produces distraction, fear and anxiety.
  • Fire & Water (pitta) — energy that controls the body’s metabolic systems, including digestion, absorption, nutrition, and temperature. In balance, pitta leads to logic, balanced work energy and intelligence. Out of balance, pitta can cause poor vision, overwork, sunburn, ulcers and arouse anger.
  • Earth & Water (kapha) — energy that controls growth in the body. It supplies water to all body parts, moisturizes the skin, and maintains the immune system. In balance, kapha is expressed as love and forgiveness. Out of balance, kapha leads to weight gain, insecurity and envy.

Everyone has vata, pitta and kapha, but usually 1 or 2 are dominant in a particular person. Many things can disturb the energy balance, such as stress, an unhealthy diet, the weather, and strained relationships. The disturbance shows up as disease.

For the sake of the subject matter of this article; let’s look at Kapha. When our basic or secondary dosha is Kapha or earth and water dominant, it makes the individual pre disposed to being heavy set, with a robust body structure, with strong immunity, thick hair, strong bones and emotionally self contained, nurturing, grounded approaches. Imbalance of the kapha dosha however makes the individual prone to weight gain, difficulty to lose weight, feelings of insecurity, water retention, nausea, drowsiness, excessive sleep. In short, kapha people are struggling with their weight all their life.

That does not mean other doshas cannot have that issue. When you eat improper diets, live unhealthy lifestyle, kapha can get aggravated causing all the same conditions as a kapha dominant person.

So, how does one combat a lifelong issue that predisposes them to weight gain if one even looks at food?
